Multiple-Choice and CRQ

 Part B Overview

This section consists of 28-30 content- and skill-based questions assessing your ability to apply, analyze, and evaluate material from the core curriculum. The items in this section are worth a total of 30 credits.

The items from Part B may be either multiple-choice or short constructed response questions (CRQ).

CRQs are a new item type for this exam, and require that students write out the answer to a question.

The answer to each CRQ question may come from a document provided on the exam, or may require that you incorporate outside information that you learned while studying this subject.

 Part B Sample CRQ

The photograph shows cells taken from a yeast culture. A dye called methylene blue has been added to these cells. Dead cells are turned blue by the dye and appear dark in the photograph. Live cells are not turned blue and appear light in the photograph.

 
1a. Make a drawing of the cell labeled P. Draw the yeast cell so that it is 5 cm across in the middle. Label your drawing to show two of the structures you have drawn. [3]

Suggest one reason why only dead cells are turned blue by the dye. [2]
