Modeling Sinusoidal Graphs

Create a sinusoidal graph:  The following methods of producing a sinusoidal graph may be used as teacher demonstrations.  Method 1 could also be used as a group activity.

Method 1:

Attach a pen, pencil, or marker to a plum bob at the end of a string.  Hold over a sheet of paper so that the pen just touches the paper.  Start a pendulum swing with a small, easy motion.  As the pendulum swings across the paper, pull the paper with a constant velocity.  The pendulum will create the path of a sinusoidal wave.

Method 2:

Securely attach a piece of string to a solid surface.  Tying the string to an existing knob or latch will work well.  Attach the other end of the string to the blade of a sabre saw and pull the string taut.  Start the sabre saw.  The vibrating blade will produce a sinusoidal wave in the string.
