Graphing Absolute Value of Complex Numbers
Topic Index | Algebra2/Trig Index | Regents Exam Prep Center

Activity:

  • Ask students to find ten complex numbers that have the same absolute value.  Use the length of 10 from the lesson page as an example of the absolute value of complex numbers 8 + 6i, -8 + 6i, 8 - 6i, -8 - 6i, 6 + 8i, -6 + 8i,
    6 - 8i, -6 - 8i, 10i, -10i, 10, and -10.
    Students' answers will vary.

  • Plot these numbers on a complex plane prepared on graph paper.

  • Ask students to determine what geometric figure contains ALL of the plotted points.  A circle of radius equal to the absolute value and center at the origin.
