Tossing Out Cubes for Working with Exponents
Topic Index | Algebra2/Trig Index | Regents Exam Prep Center

Paper cubes (or dice) can be created from 3 x 5 card stock to liven up a drill session on working with exponents.

Two cubes are made whose sides contain mathematical expressions containing exponents.  The cubes are then rolled and the expression on each cube is recorded.

Once the expressions are recorded, students can then use their knowledge of exponents to:

  • MULTIPLY the expressions,

  • DIVIDE the expressions, or

  • EVALUATE the expressions given known values.

Construction of the cubes seen in the photograph above:

Construction is very "simple".  Cut a 3 x 5 card in half lengthwise.  Fold each strip into thirds.  Tape the two sections together to form a cube.   More detailed instructions for building the cubes can be found at Cryptic Cubes:  Practice Mathematical Skills.

Here are the expressions that were used on the cubes seen in the photograph:

Cube #1 - cut, fold, and tape.

Cube #2 - cut, fold, and tape.
