Graphical Support for Rational Equations
Topic Index | Algebra2/Trig Index | Regents Exam Prep Center

When solving rational equations, you are actually trying to find the intersection of the functions on either side of the "equal" sign.  Such an investigation can be accomplished graphically.
Grab your graphing calculator.

Consider each side of the equation as a separate function.
Notice the asymptotic natures of the graphs:
(f (x) is undefined at x = 0 and g(x) is undefined at x = 2)

Look for the intersection point for the two functions.
You may use your graphing calculator to find the intersection.
Answer:   x = - 1.6
