 DBQ Short Answer Question Overview

To successfully write a DBQ short answer response, one must carefully read or examine the historical context from Part A, the document, and the question or questions associated with it.

The answer to these questions can often be located directly within the document. Other times, one must refer back to specific information given in the historical context of the DBQ.

It should be noted that the documents upon which short answer questions are based can be textual (e.g., speech, law, etc.) or visual (e.g., political cartoon, map, etc.).

Indirect DBQ Short Answer Question

DBQ short answer questions sometimes require one to consider the document upon which it is based, as well as outside information learned while studying global history. For example, Document 1 from the June 2001 Global History and Geography Regents Examination:

Document 1

The average... Japanese consumes 10 times as much of the world’s resources as the average Bangledeshi. Japan and Bangladesh have the same [number of people] but [these people] have a vastly different effect on their ecosystems [environments].

— The “Living Planet” Report

1a. How does Japan’s use of resources differ from Bangladesh’s use of resources? [1]
1b.
What is the reason for this difference? [1]

Question 1a can be answered directly from the information presented in document 1. However, question 1b requires one to recall that Japan is a developing nation and that Bangladesh is a developing nation.

Direct DBQ Short Answer Question

DBQ short answer questions can sometimes be answered based solely on the document upon which they are based. For example, Document 2 from the June 2001 U.S. History and Government Regents Examination:

Document 2

World Watch, November/December 1998

2. According to the cartoon, what is a concern of developing countries? [1]

The answer to question 2 is based completely on the chart and illustration shown in document 2 above.
