Answer the following questions dealing with measurement conversions.
 1. If a paper clip weighs approximately one gram, estimate how many paper clips will be in a 0.5 kilogram box of paper clips. Choose: 10 50 500 1000 Explanation Find the number of clips per kilogram. There are 1000 clips per kilogram. Then find the number of clips per box. There are 500 clips per box.

 2. How many pounds of ground beef should you buy to make 120 hamburgers, if each burger patty will weigh 5 ounces before cooking? Choose: 16 32 38 60 Explanation ? lbs/5 oz = 1 lb/16 oz Multiply times 120. Pounds needed = 37.5 38 lbs rounded to nearest pound

 3. You want to cut a recipe for cookies by one third (that is, you want to make only 2/3 of a full batch of cookies).  Your measuring cup is marked with fourths of a cup and also milliliters.  The recipe calls for 4 cups of flour.  How many milliliters of flour are required for your reduced recipe? Choose: 237 632 1264 1896 Explanation Unit conversion ratio = 237 ml/ 1 c ? ml / 4 c = 237 ml / 1 c Multiply by 2/3 Rounded answer 632 ml

 4. To get electrical power to an air compressor, 60 feet of wire is needed.  A 15-meter roll of wire is to be used.  Will there be a sufficient amount of wire to complete the job? Choose: Yes No Explanation 1 m = 1.09 yd 3 ft = 1 yd After solving, 15 m = 49.05 ft Rounds to 49 feet. You lack 11 feet of wire.

 5. Angela is recovering from surgery.  The doctor told her to lift no more than 20 pounds for the next 3 weeks.  A carton of powdered carpet cleaner weighs 5 kilograms.  Should Angela lift the carton? Choose: Yes No Explanation 2.2 lb = 1 kg 5 kg = 11 lb Angela can safely lift the carton.

 6. As you travel along a highway you notice the mile markers and reflectors along the side of the road.  There are 21 reflectors between the mile markers.  If the reflectors are equally spaced, how many feet are between each reflector? Choose: 22 240 480 5280 Explanation 5280 ft = 1  mile If there are 21 reflectors, there are 22 sections to be considered in the measurement.

 7. A cold medication indicates that an adult should take a  one-half fluid ounce dose.  An adult patient calls the pharmacy and says he only has a small medicine cup labeled in milliliters.  How many milliliters should the pharmacy tell him to take for a correct dosage? Choose: 8 10 13 15 Explanation 1 c = 236 ml 1 c = 8 oz When solved, the answer is 15 ml (rounded)

 8. If Pete drove 300 miles at a rate of 50 miles per hour, find the number of hours Pete traveled. Choose: 3 hrs 5 hrs 6 hrs 10 hrs Explanation Set up a proportion: distance/time = distance/time 50/1 = 300/x x = 6 hours

 9. Sue walked to her school at 2 miles per hour, picked up her bicycle and rode back home at 10 miles per hour.  If the round trip took 1.5 hours, how far is the school from Sue's home? Choose: 2.75 miles 2.5 miles 2 miles 1.25 miles Explanation In a round trip the distances are equal. Distance = rate x time Find the time first: 2t = 10(1.5-t) 2t = 15 - 10t 12t = 15 t = 15/12 = 5/4 hours Distance = (5/4) * 2 = 5/2 = 2.5 miles

 10. A copier takes 4 minutes to duplicate 480 pages.  Express the rate at which the copier duplicates, in pages per second. Choose: 200 pages/sec 120 pages/sec 20 pages/sec 2 pages/sec Explanation The given information deals with minutes, but the question asks for seconds. 1 minute = 60 seconds The unit ratio will be 480/4 = 120/1 = 120 pages per minute or per 60 seconds. 120 pages / 60 seconds = 2 pages / 1 second Ratio: 2/1 or 2 pages per second.

 11. A car uses 18 gallons of gasoline to travel 558 miles.  How far can the car travel on 12 gallons of gasoline? Choose: 372 miles 410 miles 472 miles 482 miles Explanation Set up a proportion: miles/gallon = miles/gallon 558/18 = x/12 18x = 6696 x = 372 miles
