Solve each of the following equations:

 1. Solve for x and check:    3x + 5 = 11 Answer x = 2 Check: 3(2)+5 = 11 6 + 5 = 11 11=11 Explanation 3x + 5 = 11 Subtract 5:  3x = 6 Divide by 3:  x = 2

 2. Solve for y:    2y + 1.8 = 4y - 4.4 Answer y = 3.1 Explanation 2y + 1.8 = 4y - 4.4 Subtract 2y:   1.8 = 2y - 4.4 Add 4.4:         6.2 = 2y Divide by 2:    3.1 = y

 3. Solve for m and check:    8(m + 5) = 16 Answer m = -3 Check: 8(-3+5) = 16 8(2)=16 16=16 Explanation 8(m + 5) = 16 Multiply          8m + 40 = 16 Subtract 40:   8m = -24 Divide by 8:    m = -3

4.
 Solve for x: 1 x + 6 = 10 2 Answer x = 8 Explanation (1/2)x + 6 = 10 Subtract 6:           (1/2)x = 4 Divide by (1/2):    x = 8

 5. Solve for c and check:  5c - 4 - 2c + 1 = 8c + 2 Answer c = -1 Check: 5(-1) - 4 - 2(-1) + 1 = 8(-1) + 2 -5 - 4 +2 + 1 = -8 + 2 -6 = -6 Explanation 5c - 4 - 2c + 1 = 8c + 2 Combine similar terms 3c - 3 = 8c + 2 Subtract 3c:     -3 = 5c + 2 Subtract 2:       -5 = 5c Divide by 5:      -1 = c
